Dramatic play setup guide

Bakery dramatic play: how to set it up.

A bakery needs less than you think. Play dough, a tray, and somebody who wants a cake for a reason. Here is how to open one and keep it going.

What you actually need

Play dough or salt dough, a baking tray, cupcake cases, and a cloth for the counter. A cooling rack is a good addition if you have one, because it gives finished work somewhere to go.

Real baking tins beat plastic. They are heavier, they sound right, and children treat them more carefully.

The order form is the engine

A child making cakes alone runs out of ideas in a few minutes. A child making a cake for somebody who asked for three, with sprinkles, by Friday, has a problem to solve.

That is what the order form does. It turns baking into a request from another person, which is where the talking starts.

Three jobs, not a whole kitchen

Someone taking the order, someone making it, and someone at the counter handing it over. The handover is the part children enjoy most and the part most setups leave out.

A fourth child can take deliveries. Give them a box and somewhere to deliver to.

When the kitchen goes quiet

Usually it means everything is being made and nothing is being asked for. The orders have stopped.

Take an order yourself. Ask for something specific and slightly awkward, a cake with four candles and no icing, and the play restarts around solving it.

For children who are not writing yet

An order can be drawn. A recipe card can be marked with how many. A decorating plan is pictures by design. Nothing here needs letters, and no page has to be finished.

Printing without emptying a cartridge

A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.

The Bakery kit

49 pages per edition at $6.95. Classroom signs and role badges, a bakery order form, recipe card, decorating plan, bakery receipt, delivery form and ingredient inventory, plus picture labels, conversation prompts, sorting activities, counting materials, planning pages and storage labels. Four print editions. Digital download; props are not included.
