Dramatic play setup guide
Post office dramatic play: how to set it up.
A post office is the center where writing starts happening without being asked for. Here is what to gather, how to open it, and how to keep the mail moving.
What you actually need
Envelopes, scrap paper, pencils, a box with a slot cut in the lid, and a bag. Save junk mail for a week and you have most of it.
Two labelled delivery spots somewhere in the room matter more than any prop. Mail needs somewhere to go.
Why writing happens here on its own
Children write at the post office because somebody is going to receive it. The audience is the motivation, not the paper.
A scribble posted to a friend who opens it is a complete act of writing. Do not correct it. The loop closing is the lesson.
Three jobs, not a sorting office
Someone writing, someone sorting and weighing, and a carrier who delivers. The carrier job is the one that gets children out of the center and moving, which is often why it works for a class that will not sit.
A fourth can run the counter and sell the postage.
Keep the mail moving
The usual failure is a postbox that fills up and never empties. The play dies when nothing arrives.
Empty it on a schedule and deliver visibly. A child who receives something comes back to write a reply, and that is the loop you want running.
For children who are not writing yet
A letter can be a drawing. A mailing slip can be marked rather than filled in. A delivery log can be a tick. Nothing here needs letters to work, and no page has to be finished.
Printing without emptying a cartridge
A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.
