Dramatic play setup guide
Dentist dramatic play: how to set it up.
A dentist center does something the others do not. It lets a child rehearse something they are nervous about, from the chair they control. Here is how to open one.
What you actually need
A chair, a torch, a mirror if you have a clean one, and a toy with a mouth. An egg carton makes a usable set of teeth and a toothbrush does the rest.
A white shirt or apron turns a child into the dentist faster than any prop. The costume is the permission.
Let the patient be in charge
The reason this center works is that the child in the chair is usually the one who has been in a real chair and did not enjoy it. Here they can say stop.
Build that in on purpose. Agree a signal that ends the check-up, and honour it every time. A child who learns the chair is escapable is doing something useful.
Three jobs, not a surgery
A dentist, a patient and someone at the desk with the appointment card. The desk job matters more than it looks, because it gives the anxious child somewhere to stand that is not the chair.
A fourth can be the assistant who writes down what the dentist says.
What the forms are actually for
A check-in sheet and an exam report give the play a beginning and an end. Without them a check-up lasts eleven seconds and repeats.
The exam report is also where counting happens. Counting teeth is the rare case where a number has an obvious reason to exist.
For children who are not writing yet
An exam report can be a drawing of which tooth. A care plan can be ticked. Assistant notes can be marks. Nothing here needs letters, and no page has to be finished.
Printing without emptying a cartridge
A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.
