Dramatic play setup guide

Farmers market dramatic play: how to set it up.

A farmers market is the fall center that does not depend on a holiday. It works in October, it works in November, and nobody has to opt out of it.

What you actually need

Crates or shallow boxes, a cloth, and produce. Real vegetables for a day are better than plastic for a term, and the ones going soft in the staff room are free.

A set of scales is the single prop that earns its place here, because weighing is the one thing a market does that a shop does not.

Use the harvest, not the holiday

October and November are crowded with themes that some families opt out of. A market is not one of them. Pumpkins, apples and squash carry the season without carrying an occasion.

That also means the center does not have to come down on the first of the month.

Three jobs, not a whole market

A stallholder, a shopper with a list, and someone weighing and taking payment. The weighing job is the one to protect, because it is where the real counting lives.

A fourth can bring the harvest in from the delivery.

When the market starts repeating

The sign is produce moving from crate to bag and back with no conversation. Prices fix this faster than anything else.

Put a price on each crate and a fixed number of buttons in the purse. Suddenly the shopper has to choose, and choosing is what makes them talk.

For children who are not writing yet

A market list can be pictures. A receipt can be a scribble. An inventory check can be a tally of real objects rather than numerals. Nothing here needs letters, and no page has to be finished.

Printing without emptying a cartridge

A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.

The Farmers Market kit

Classroom signs and role badges, a market shopping list, market receipt, customer order, inventory check, price check and harvest delivery, plus picture labels, conversation prompts, sorting activities, counting materials, planning pages and storage labels.
