Dramatic play setup guide
Ice cream shop dramatic play: how to set it up.
An ice cream shop is the center where counting arrives without being introduced. One scoop or two is a real question with a real answer.
What you actually need
Pom poms or crumpled paper for scoops, cones made from rolled card, a scoop or spoon, and tubs. Muffin cases make respectable sundae dishes.
Keep the scoops in separate tubs by color. Sorting them back at the end is half the maths and all of the tidying.
Counting arrives on its own here
Nobody has to introduce number to this center. One scoop or two is the entire transaction, and a child who cannot yet count to ten can still hand over exactly two things.
Prices make it harder in a useful way. Two scoops costs two buttons, and suddenly the purse runs out.
Three jobs, not a parlour
Someone taking the order, someone scooping, and a customer who has to decide. Deciding is the job people forget to protect, and it is where the talking is.
A fourth can run the till and count the buttons.
When it starts repeating
The sign is scoops going into cones and straight back into the tub. The order has stopped mattering.
Bring in a flavour vote, or a party order for six people. A bigger number is usually enough to restart it.
For children who are not writing yet
An order can be pointed at on the menu. A sundae design can be drawn. A flavour vote can be a mark in a column. Nothing here needs letters, and no page has to be finished.
Printing without emptying a cartridge
A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.
