Dramatic play setup guide
Weather station dramatic play: how to set it up.
A weather station is the one center that can run for five minutes a day all year and still feel new, because the thing it observes keeps changing.
What you actually need
A window, a clipboard, and somewhere to stand and present. A cardboard microphone and a map on the wall turn it into a broadcast.
A thermometer is the one bought item worth having, because it gives a number that changes on its own.
The daily report is the whole routine
Five minutes a day beats a two-hour setup. One child looks outside, records what they see, and tells the class. Tomorrow somebody else does it.
Because it repeats, children get fluent at it. That is unusual in a center and it is the reason this one earns a permanent corner.
Three jobs, not a studio
An observer at the window, a recorder with the log, and a presenter with the microphone. The presenter job is the one shy children grow into, because the script is short and the same every day.
A fourth can keep the comparison chart and say whether today is warmer than yesterday.
What to actually record
Keep it to what a child can see from a window: sun, cloud, rain, wind, how cold it feels. Numbers from a thermometer if you have one.
The comparison is where the thinking is. Warmer or colder than yesterday is a real question with a checkable answer.
For children who are not writing yet
An observation log can be a weather picture circled. A cloud watch can be a drawing. A comparison can be an arrow up or down. Nothing here needs letters, and no page has to be finished.
Printing without emptying a cartridge
A full center in color is a lot of ink. Every kit ships in four editions, and the low ink versions keep the line work and drop the heavy fills. The A4 editions carry the same pages as the Letter ones.
